Biphasic Day 19

Last night was the first time in a long while that I have actually properly slept the hours I am supposed to. I went to bed at 1:00am, and it actually took me 15 - 20 minutes to get to sleep. This is the first time that I haven't fallen asleep pretty much instantly, although this might have been because I was working on something right up until going to bed (trying to fix some memory issues on my web hosting).

This morning I woke up at 5:30am as usual, and felt pretty good. I spent this morning playing Guild Wars 2 with Yu Lee.

Today wasn't particularly interesting. I got in from work a little early and had a good 1.5 hour nap. Now it is 11:00pm and I feel tired enough to sleep so I am going to go to bed at 11:30pm. I'm also going out for a curry tomorrow evening and I don't want to be too tired for that.

I am not planning on sticking to the sleep pattern sorigidlynow. I have been trying to do the exact same hours each day, but I think this leaves me with a little sleep debt sometimes. I am going to try having a nap after work, and then simply going to bed when I'm tired in the evening for a while. If it stops me from sleeping for my naps I will reassess the situation.

Last night I was very tired, and in the end I went to bed at 10:00pm. I woke up naturally this morning at 4:30am and got up.

Today I wasn't as tired as yesterday, which is odd because I had a similar sleep pattern apart from sleeping less last night. I was a bit tired at some points during the day but nothing too bad.

After work I wasn't particularly sleepy, but I tried to have a nap anyway. I set the alarm for 2 hours, but I woke up after just over an hour when Yu Lee came in. I don't remember sleeping, but there is no way it felt like I was laying there for over an hour so I guess I must have slept. It wasn't the best nap, but it seems to have allowed me to stay up until my normal bed time!

This evening I have felt tired but I have been quite productive, doing work on my website and trying to reduce the memory usage of my server. It is 12:30am now and I am feeling pretty tired, so I think I will head off to bed at about 12:50am.

There's not much more to say about today really!

Another Monophasic Day

As with yesterday's post, I am writing this the day after in the morning. Yesterday would have been the 17th day of the biphasic experiment.

Yesterday was the second (and final) day of my course. The previous night I had crashed from about 8:15pm to 4:45am for a total of 8.5 hours, and although I had a lot of sleep, I actually think I felt worse yesterday!

I have been recording my alertness levels throughout the day, and I will post a chart at the end of the week, but my average score for yesterday was lower than the previous day and I also had this 'aching eyes' feeling all day.

Yu Lee sent me a text message during the day saying that she had napped from 9:00pm to 10:00pm, and then slept 4.5 hours from 1:00am to 5:30am, so she actually did my sleeping pattern better than I did!

When my course finished I came back to Yu Lee's mum's house, and she had already cooked dinner. After dinner I wanted to have a nap but I realised that I wasn't tired enough at that point, and after another hour Yu Lee had arrived to pick me up. We ended up leaving just before 9:00pm, so I didn't have time to nap before leaving. In the car I was extremely tired, so when we got home at 10:00pm I decided to set up my alarm and go straight to sleep.

Whoops!

This is the post for 16th day of my biphasic sleep experiment, but I am writing it at 5:00am on the 17th day.

Yesterday I was doing a course in London. I felt alert all morning, but as usual, after lunch I started to feel a bit of tiredness around 1:00pm. When I got back to Yu Lee's mum's house I did try to sleep but I wasn't tired, so after about half an hour I gave up.

I came down stairs and had some dinner, and chatted to Yu Lee's mum for a while, and just after 8:00pm she decided to go out and do something so I thought I'd try taking a late nap.

I am using my vibrating alarm clock here to set my nap alarms, so it is not as simple as with the countdown timer that I normally use. I set the alarm time for 10:10pm and settled down to sleep.

The next thing I knew I had woken up naturally, so I looked over at the clock to see what time it was. 4:30am. Whoops!

It turns out that I had set the time on the alarm very carefully, but I hadn't made sure that I had turned it on! This was actually due to my failed nap earlier in the day, as I had given up before the alarm went off so I disabled it to make sure it wouldn't go off while I was downstairs eating my dinner.

In total I slept for 8.5 hours, which is by far the longest sleep I have had in the past month. You might think that all of that extra sleep would make me feel extra alert, but actually that is not the affect it has had! Maybe during the day I will be more awake, but right now I feel a certain kind of drowsiness that I used to get from sleeping in too long on a weekend.

Tonight's challenge is going to be deciding how to get back into my sleeping pattern. I may have to simply skip my nap today, and then just sleep 4.5 hours tonight. Let's see what happens...

Biphasic Day 15

Last night I had 1 beer and 1 glass of wine about 5 hours before I went to sleep. I was pretty tired before bed, so I went to bed about 20 minutes early.

This morning when I woke up I felt quite sleepy and also slightly hungover. It wasn't a proper hangover, but I definitely had some very mild hangover feelings. I think this is probably because I have a little bit of sleep debt from missing my nap on Friday.

After we got up we played some computer games for a while, and then set off to London, to Yu Lee's mum's house. I have a course tomorrow and Tuesday so I am going to be staying here for a couple of days.

When we got here we had a massive lunch, and then went out rollerblading with Yu Lee's mum in the park. It wasn't an epic 17 mile session like yesterday, but we spent a couple of hours out and got back around 4:00pm. It wasn't too strenuous but I could definitely feel it in my legs afterwards, but I think this was mainly due to yesterday's session.

At 4:15pm we went for a nap, and I set the alarm for just over 2 hours. I took a few minutes to fall asleep, and drifted off into a nice deep sleep. When I woke up I was definitely dreaming, and as I woke up I thought it was a long and complicated (and pretty cool) dream, but the alarm was quite distracting and by the time I'd turned it off my memory of the dream had faded. I am definitely waking from REM more often than not at the moment.

After our nap we had dinner and relaxed, not doing much. I feel really sleepy this evening and it is only 11:00pm, so I think I will go to bed at 11:30. It will be interesting to see if I sleep the night through: If I wake early I will know I wasn't that tired, but if I sleep through until the normal time it probably means I needed the early night.

I think it's a good idea to get some extra rest as I want to be alert for my course tomorrow.
